Do you hit in front of the rope or behind the rope? I’ve always assumed you’re supposed to be in front of it but everyone I’ve seen here is hitting behind it and now I’m questioning everything I’ve ever known.
It’s gotta be behind. If not, people would just take liberties and keep moving forward to the good grass. Also… injuries.

Behind for sure

If someone goes past the rope make sure you let them know they’re entering a world of pain.

Are you trolling? What would the rope indicate if you were meant to hit in front of it?

I’ve seen it both ways but it’s usually pretty obvious. On this one the balls are all behind the rope which is where you hit. If they were in front of the rope then that’s what you’d do.
notmsndotcom
Behind but those club holders should be much further back imo
SaveHogwarts
I’m curious as to why you’d think it would be in front of the rope when the mats are 8 yards behind the rope and there’s good range grass between the mats and the rope

I have never once seen this setup intended for hitting in front of the rope.

I’ve never seen someone go in front of the rope unless they were hitting a driver so as to not take divots. And then it was because the ground was eaten up with divot behind the line.

Is this charrdonay golf club? Beautiful course

Behind the rope, it’s for range maintenance/ player safety. Players use that area, then grounds crew comes fills all the divots and everything the move it to a new spot for the next day.
KeiserSoze24
At my club behind the line is artificial turf without a rubber tee so you cannot hit your driver. Whenever someone wants to hit their driver they just move up to the grass and set up their tees and hit. I’m used to hitting behind the line or off the artificial grass.
ksobby
Behind. The range will move it up to cleaner grass once the current area gets overworked.

What mental gymnastics do you go through to convince yourself in front of the rope is the answer?

Behind, but at first glimpse I thought this was an artillery range

Why would you consider in front?
sephiroth3650
Behind the rope. As others have said, the club caddies need to be further back. But you always hit from behind the ropes at the range.

Look where the other pitch marks are…..

I actually was at a range a few months back where they had a switchable sign regarding whether you were to hit in front of or behind the rope. I thought it was very strange and as others pointed out, liberties were taken on finding fresh grass as the sign indicated in front of the rope when I went. They did have wooden planks in between each station and you were supposed to stay within the length of the plank.

Always behind and in between the club valets.

You think everyone else is wrong on the range so you come here to ask? Behind… like everyone else.

The setup pictured is terrible. Should be much more clear and should not have anything in front of where people are hitting from. I can see divots behind the club stands. Pretty much every range I have been to has 2 markers or ropes that you hit from in between, it’s not your fault you’re confused what to do here
Cool_Hawks
Youre required to straddle the rope.

Behind. But there’s always some entitled individual who does what he wants and hits in front of it anyway.

You have a ball crate, line yourself up with that.
But generally, behind the rope. Unless there are two, then in between

1000% behind the rope
Large_Bumblebee_9751
My course hits in front of the rope, and our rope moves back about 10ft per week. Didn’t really realize how unusual this seems to be

That is a Terrible rope set up

In this case: behind. You can see divots behind the tee line, which means the crew is moving the tee line fwd every day.
Context: we own 5 driving ranges. It’s VERY hard to maintain great range grass. It never grows back as fast as you’d like.
The reason for the line is to control wear/tear. You rotate tee lines around a very specific growing schedule.
Hitting outside of these lines hurts the guys/gals hitting over the next few days.
Narrow_Roof_112
The line is just a suggestion. Actually you can hit from anywhere.
Alt_Reed_404
We have a specific measurement at the course the rope moves forward each day when on grass.

Every club I’ve worked at or played at has the racks and buckets (I hate those things) set back from the intended slot and has a rope signifying don’t cross the line.

Genuine question. How long have you been going in front of the rope and no ones ever corrected you?
